Spot an order-of-operations error

~6 min

A wrong first step usually shows the misunderstanding.

Check the First Step

Order of Operations
  • 1. Parentheses ( )
  • 2. Multiplication and Division
  • 3. Addition and Subtraction

To find an error in an order of operations problem, check the first step the student took to see if they followed the correct order: Parentheses, Multiplication/Division, then Addition/Subtraction.

💡 If the student did addition or subtraction before multiplication, that is usually where the mistake begins.
